They aren’t just for celebrities and evangelist’s wives anymore!
Jessica Simpson rocks her set, JLo’s are said to be made of mink, and even Michelle Obama is in on the trend. iVillage called fake eyelashes the Wonderbra of makeup and I agree. Most people are wary about putting fake eyelashes on themselves, unfortunately if you don’t keep a makeup artist on staff, you probably don’t have a choice. The truth is, it’s not that hard to learn to do and the results will make your man batty.
So, here are some tips that will help you play up those eyes and play down those crow’s feet. The key is to keep it subtle and allow yourself a few tries before lashing out. For day time go with singles or fans of 3. For evening go with a full strip but choose a short or medium lash length. If you want to really baby step it, cut one strip in half and apply each half to the outer edges of your eyes.
1. Moving on… with the full strip, hold it to your eye and cut the excess from the inner corner of the strip so it fits nicely. Please don’t cut it while you are still holding it at your eye. That would be incredibly unintelligent on your part.
2. Now, make sure that you have clear glue. The one that may come with the lashes is okay for touch ups, but the clear one found at the beauty supply stores -sometimes in a glass vile- is better. Be warned if you pull that little bottle out randomly in public, people will think you have a drug problem. You can try say something disarming like, “Oh, I’m just addicted to my fabulous lashes,” but they won’t believe you and may have an intervention.
3. Apply your makeup, minus mascara and have your eyelashes curled before putting on lashes. Okay, now use a brush, toothpick, or q-tip to get the glue onto the lashes and wait at least 10 seconds until its tacky. You’re not trying to adhere an appendage, so tacky will do just fine.
4. With a tweezers hold the strip at the middle and start from the inside out. Try to get the strip as close the lash line as possible. You will have a few seconds to re-adjust if you are too far from your own lashes. Once in place press and hold falsies against your lashes for 30 seconds. Then put on liner –liquid is best to cover the line and your mascara, take a deep breath and start on the other eye.
5. After both eyes are done and you’re finished admiring your work in the mirror, or berating yourself for being so inept and stepping on them like spiders, go out and have a great time.
For the first couple times try Ardell, which I still use. They do the trick, and you won’t be upset if you have to trash them. Once you’re a pro, try MAC or shu uemera, they are worth the investment and you can probably get more uses out of them. If you are careful with the glue, you should get at least 3 to 5 wears on any lashes.
How do you factor in the time to get the rest of yourself ready? Such a process. Who knew?
Jamie- I don’t have time to get the rest of myself ready… on days that I wear my lashes, I wear nothing else. Maybe it’s not the lashes that are turning heads. Well, either way, I’m a sucker for attention.
Yowsa! I never even considered fake eyelashes! They look so pretty and I am sure dh would agree – but I think I would probably screw it all up and they’d be upside down or something lol!
I think fake lashes can look great when properly applied. Thanks for all the how to help. I’ve recently found an alternate to fakes that won’t fall off. You can coat your lashes with big lash then seperate and extend with a vibrating mascara on lash tips. Works great no fake.
Bari- Thanks for the non-fake tip. The truth is, I rarely use my fake lashes, but when I do, I always feel sexier. Normally, I do what you do, but I don’t have a vibrating wand… I just shake my hand really fast.
I am totally trying this, but if my fingers get stuck to my eyes and I have to walk around like that all day I am definately blaming you and your MODERN tips. LOL.
I would never have thought to do this, but it actually seems simple and it looks so good when people have those fake proffess. lashes. I’m tryin it!
I have never wore them but have always wanted to, I bought some just really didn’t know how to put them on thanks for the tips I will let you know what happens 🙂
Jenny back in the late 60’s or early 70’s can’t remember when. Wouldn.t go out without my fabulous fakes. Only took a few seconds to put them on. I guess what goes around comes around. Will have to go out and buy some again.

yes, sometimes people will notice they’re fake. But thats okay, you just admit it and they move on.

Rosy-i put them on for the first time and i love them.i did it my self after i watch my friend get them done it was very easy.im just concern if they are gonna make my own eyelashes to fall off and never grow.=(
Thank you SO much. This literally saved my life. I have to wear false eyelashes for my Show Choir’s show tonight and I bought some from Sephora (mistake T_T). The black glue was literally splattering everywhere and i had to get a towel to towel the lashes off a few times… but luckily I gave up, found this post, and thankfully learned how to apply them. Thanks again!!
